Currently the Women's Tennis team is ranked 19th in the nation and are 4-1 against DIII opponents. And a key factor to the team's success is Senior Jessica Ruth. Ruth on the season only has one loss in singles which was to the top player in the west region. She earned the biggest win of her career over Claremont's #1 last weekend in Southern California in the team's first victory over Claremont, and went 2-0 in singles this past weekend. Currently she is ranked 5th in the west region for singles and 4th in the west region for doubles.
Currently the Men's Volleyball team is ranked #2 in the nation and have been going strong and playing well. And Sophomore middle blocker Austin Einhorn is a key factor in the team's success. Currently, Einhorn is listed at #13 in the nation for hitting percentage (.391) and #14 nationally for blocking (1.10 per game). Senior forward Megan Gaynor has been named the Association of Division III Independents women’s basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season. UCSC defeated a pair of Independent foes this weekend, as they topped the University of Dallas, 63-57, and Colorado College, 61-58. Gaynor averaged 20 points, nine rebounds and 2.5 assists per game, while shooting 56 percent from the field and 80 percent from the charity stripe. She recorded a double-double against UD with 12 points, 10 rebounds and four assists and she followed that performance with 28 points and eight boards against
Tyler Hinz, a 6-2 outside hitter for UC Santa Cruz, has been selected as the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III Men’s National Player of the Week. Hinz helped the Slugs to five wins at the Slug Dome Invitational last week to begin the 2007 season 5-0. For the week, Hinz averaged 2.64 kills, 0.79 digs, 0.79 blocks and 0.5 assists per game, while hitting .421 on 57 attacks.
Senior forward Megan Gaynor has been named the Association of Division III Independents women’s basketball Player of the Week. Gaynor scored 40 points and grabbed 19 rebounds in a pair of games at the Chapman University Tiger/Panther Tournament, en route an All-Tournament Team selection. She posted 19 points and 11 boards against Occidental College and followed that performance with a 21-point, eight-rebound effort versus Franklin College. Gaynor averaged 20 points and 9.5 rebounds on the week.
At the NCAA DIII West Region Championships held in Chino, CA on November 11th, Junior Tamara Torlakson finished 10th overall in the race, qualifying as an individual for the NCAA DIII National Championships. Torlakson ran her race plan perfectly, running in the top 15 most of the race and moving into 10th over the last 1000 meters to grab the final qualifying spot for Nationals from the West with a personal best and school record 23:14. Torlakson was UC Santa Cruz's first cross country runner to race at the National Meet, which was held in West Chester, OH.
University of California-Santa Cruz senior forward/defender Steve Wondolowski (Danville, Calif.) is this week’s Association of Division III Independents men’s soccer Player of the Week. Wondolowski netted a pair of goals in a 5-0 win over Claremont, extending the Banana Slugs’ win streak to 14 games. Wondolowski, who is coached by Dan Chamberlain, has 14 goals on the season and has helped his team to a 17-1 overall record.
University of California-Santa Cruz junior outside hitter Jihan Spearman (Berkley, Calif.) has been selected as the Association of Division III Independents volleyball Player of the Week. Spearman totaled 41 kills, 48 digs and six blocks in three matches as the Banana Slugs went 3-1 on the week. In 12 games, she averaged 3.4 kills/game and 4.0 digs/game. Against Cal State East Bay, she led the team with 14 kills and a .321 hitting percentage and she followed that with nine kills and a season-high 21 digs against Dominican. She capped the week with a season-high 18 kills and added 19 digs in a 3-2 win over Colorado College. Featured Slug Athletes 2006-07
As the starting setter and team captain, Reynolds has lead the Slugs to the Molten Invitational (the Final Four of Division III Men's Volleyball) for the second time in his career. Reynolds is among the national leaders as a setter, averaging 12.5 assists per game. During a crucial road trip last week, Reynolds helped lead the Slugs in commanding wins over Clarke College and MSOE, averaging 14 assists per game. |
