SANTA CRUZ, Cali, - The University of California, Santa Cruz Athletics hosted the 9th Annual Student-Athletes Awards Banquet this evening. This is an opportunity to recognize all the on-field and off-field accomplishments during this historic year.
This year, the Slugs were honored with:
- 6 NCAA appearances
- 4 GSAC Championships
- 3 All-Americans
- 2 Conference MVPs
- 2 Conference "Coach of the Year"
- 80 All-Conference Athletes
- 185 Scholar Athletes
Highlight of awards included:
Tiffany Guzman- Most Inspirational Women's Golf
Tiffany Guzman is an exceptional student-athlete who has overcome tremendous adversity throughout her youth to stand where she is today. Tiffany has come a long way from spending most of her youth at the City of Hope with Leukemia. She is always willing to volunteer her time ven though she has golf, school, and her own busitness to contend with. Tiffany always has a smile on her face, fights for what's right, and lookson the positive for everything.
Lake Merchen- Male Athlete of the Year
Lake Merchen becomes part of the elite Slug Alumni that have played at UCSC. He is the 14th different Slug to garner AVCA All-American honors which is the 4th most in NCAA DIII history. He led the Slugs to a #7 National Ranking in his second season at UC Santa Cruz. Merchen reached the 500 career kill mark against Ramapo this season on March 13. This year, Merchen led the Slugs in kills with 305 while hitting .336 and was second on the team with 137 digs.
Ashley Holmes- Female Athlete of the Year Women's Basketball Senior Guard/Forward
Islay Fossett- Highest Cumalitive Female GPA (3.91 GPA) Women's Tennis Sophomore
Andrew Beckner-Highest Cumaltive Male GPA (3.95 GPA) Men's Cross Country and Men's Track & Field Senior
Men's Track & Field - Highest Male Team GPA (3.36 GPA)
Women's Basketball - Highest Female Team GPA (3.60 GPA)
Cameron Braun - Student-Athlete Advisory Commitee Award Men's Swimming Senior
In addition, UCSC Athletics also honored 185 scholar athletes for finishing the 2015-2016 academic year with over a 3.00 GPA as well as the 87 seniors for their outstanding contribution, dedicaiton, and support of University of California, Santa Cruz Athletics during their careers,
