THE TOURNAMENT:
2008 is the fifth year for the biggest departmental fundraiser for Women's Athletics at UCSC. Proceeds benefit our eight NCAA Division III teams: Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, Water Polo, Golf, Swimming & Diving, Tennis and Cross-Country. Our goal this year is to raise $20,000 and we hope to accomplish this through registration fees, sponsorships, raffle tickets, and prizes and games at different holes on the golf course. In addition, we will finish the day with a fantastic BBQ at the picnic tables at DeLaveaga Golf Course where we will hold a live auction and draw the winning numbers for the raffle.

2008 Women's Sport Team Accomplishments

ABOUT RITA WALKER:

Rita Walker, UCSC Title IX Coordinator/Sexual Harassment Officer, is a first-rate supporter of UCSC athletics.  For over a decade she has partnered with key administrators to assist the athletic department in reaching Title IX compliance. With her leadership they successfully marched toward compliance with the phasing in of women's sports over time while maintaining and/or increasing our opportunities for male athletes. With unfailing effectiveness she diligently works to help insure that UCSC student athletes have a positive and rewarding experience.

Rita recently stated, "I am proud of the collaborative efforts between staff and coaches at OPERS, the Vice Chancellor's office and the Title IX office in achieving compliance with Title IX.  Our student athletes are skilled, dedicated, and intelligent and they compete solely for the love of the sport.  For that reason our goal is to provide them with the best experience possible. The ongoing support of our athletic programs by campus and community members makes it possible to do just that."

Rita’s support of the athletic department has taken a variety of forms.  She attends several home games annually; funds mentoring and professional development opportunities for the senior women administrator and the sports information director positions; and serves as a trusted consultant to OPERS’ administrators, athletic directors, coaches and students. In 2003, Rita provided seed money for the first golf tournament designed to raise funds for the UCSC women’s athletic teams.

To demonstrate our great respect and abundant appreciation for her significant contributions, in 2006 our annual golf tournament was named The Rita Walker Scramble.
