UCSC Athletics and Vine Hill Elementary School Celebrate Dr. Sues’s Birthday for Read Across America Day

katie vb
Ten student athletes visited Vine Hill Elementary School today to read to children in celebration of Dr. Sues’s birthday. We had three members of the Men’s and Women’s swim team, two members from Men’s Soccer, one member from Women’s Soccer, two from Men’s Basketball, and two from Men’s Water Polo represent the student-athletes of UCSC. The day is known as “Read Across America,” and we enjoyed a morning filled with tongue twisting tales transcribed by the famous Dr. Sues himself, along with other literary favorites that the children picked out for us to read. We split into groups and visited various classrooms ranging from kindergarten to the 4th grade. We also had some athletes remain in the library, and they read to children who were present with their class and teacher at the time. The teachers were very grateful, the children, full of energy and enthusiasm- which was equally matched with the zeal and compassion of the student-athletes. The event was organized by Bobby Petro, member of the Men’s Soccer team and Community Service Chair of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). We owe a special thank you to Elizabeth Poser, librarian of Vine Hill Elementary School and co-organizer/facilitator of the event.
