Slug Swimmers Finish Off Season in Ohio
WOOSTER, OH -- After a strong performance at their
conference meet in February, seven slugs qualified for the National Championships.
The female qualifiers were Seniors Erin Hunter and Mariko Ikehata, and
Junior Meg Crowley. The men qualified Seniors Troy Marcikic and Kenton
Drake, and Sophomores Ben Ferguson and Jamie Johnson. The NCAA qualifiers
took part in the Division 3 National Championships at Miami University
in Ohio. The women's meet took place March 13-15 and the men's meet took
place March 20-22. The women finished with 5 All-Americans and the men
finished with 4. (more)

Slug Swimming Finishes Regular Season at the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships
LONG BEACH, CA -- The UCSC swim team finished off
its regular season last weekend at the PCSC Championships in Long Beach,
CA. The men finished third with 1318.5 points, and the women finished
fifth with 812 points. Both teams finished with their highest point total
ever at the championships and both men and women finished as the top division
three team. The slug men were also the first D3 team to ever finish in
the top three. In the swimming portion of the meet alone, without counting
the scores from diving, the slugs finished in second place, 2.5 points
ahead of division 2 UCSD. (more)

Slugs Challenge Division 1 Rival Cal Poly
SANTA CRUZ, CA --This past weekend, the slug swimmers
finished off their regular season with a meet against Cal Poly. Over
the past few years these teams have become rivals despite the difference
in athletic funding. Cal Poly proved to be too much for the Slugs in
the end, winning the men's meet with a score of 178 to106, and women's
sides of the meet with a score of 201 to 98. (more)

UC Santa Cruz Swim Team Sweeps First Annual Cal Lutheran Winter Invitational
THOUSAND OAKS, CA -- Both Slug men and women's
teams dominate a field which included Whitworth University, Pacific Lutheran
University, Cal Lutheran University, and Fresno Pacific University. The
meet was an important one as it marked the only time this season the slugs
face Division III Competition outside of NCAAs. (more)

UCSC Swimmers post top times in the Nation at Nike Cup
IRVINE, CA -- The UCSC men's and women's swim teams
had their best meet of the season this past weekend at Nike Cup in Long
Beach, Ca. The men finished 10th out of 17 teams, and the women
finished 14th out of 22 teams. Both teams finished as the top
division 3 team in the meet which consisted of division 1 powerhouses
like Stanford and UCLA. Although the Banana Slugs were only given a few
days of rest, many of the swimmers were able to get their NCAA cuts. The
slugs finished with a total of 10 NCAA b-cuts and 2 a-cuts. (more)

Slug's Swim in Home Opener against University of Denver
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- The UCSC men's and women's swim
teams swam their first home meet of the season this past Saturday. Their
meet with Division 1 University of Denver marked the first time these
two teams met in the schools' history. The women fell with a final score
of 112-185, and the men were defeated 109-171.(more)

Banana Slug Swimmers put up fight against Division
I Teams
SAN JOSE, CA -- The UCSC Swim Team faced Division
1 UC Davis and San Jose State on Saturday, October 13th. The meet was
held as a double dual meet against both teams for the women, and a dual
meet against Davis for the men. Despite being overpowered in the end,
the slugs were able to put a good fight against both scholarship programs.(more)
SAN JOSE, CA -- The San Jose State University
Spartans will entertain UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz in a standard double
dual meet set to begin at 1:00 p.m. at The Aquatics Center on campus.
San Jose State will be scored in separate dual meets against both the
Aggies and the Banana Slugs, while the two visitors will also square
off against each other in men's competition. (more)

Ian W. Carney Transbay Swim, From a Swimmer's Point of View
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- Every year, UC Santa Cruz's team
swims from Santa Cruz to Monterey as part of the Transbay Swim. This 26-mile
swim is done in a relay format, consisting of two relay teams of six.
The swimmers compete without wetsuits, in the 50-degree waer during 20-minute
shifts. They are accompanied by a trio of kayaks that are each there for
the swimmer's safety against sharks, jellyfish, and sea lions. A yearly
team bonding experience, the swim has also turned into much more than
a fundraiser. (more)

Broken hip won't hinder UCSC Coach from attempting Roughwater Swim
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- On land, Joel Wilson
lumbers around like a rusty robot these days. In water, he's still as
elegant as an eel. Wilson, the head of the Masters swim program at UC
Santa Cruz and the assistant swim coach there, plans to prove he's still
