Ruth Drops a Close Match 7-5 in First Round
of NCAA's
Round one of the singles competition was
finally completed at 1:15 p.m., and two more seeds fell during the round.Nicole
Pontee of Vassar College came from behind to defeat #8-seed Becky Morse-Karzen
of the University of Mary Washington 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.Meghan McCooey of Tufts
University displayed her mental toughness after dropping the first set 6-1 to
#2-seed Katie Tabb, before coming back to win the second set 7-5 and the third

Slugs Win First Round of NCAA's
UC Santa Cruz won their first round of
the NCAA tournament with a 5-1 victory over Linfield College.After a convincing
sweep of doubles, Kyla Rowe was the first singles victory with a 6-2, 6-0 win
over Nelson.Jessica Ruth clinched the match for the Slugs by defeating Kuenzli
6-3, 6-2.The Slugs will face #2 Redlands in the second round. (more)

Jessica Ruth is Selected for Individual
Championships
Senior Jessica Ruth, the number one singles player for
UC Santa Cruz, qualified for the NCAA individual singles tournament to be held
May 16-18.Currently she is ranked third in the west region for singles and
sixth in the west for doubles.In Division III competition, she dropped one
singles match during the season to the #1 player in the west.This is the third
time in the program's history that a player has been selected for the individual
championships.

Slugs Qualify for Regionals
Ranked 4th in the west region, the slug women's
tennis team qualified for the first three rounds of the NCAA tournament being
held this weekend.Pomona-Pitzer is hosting the regional tournament, and UCSC
is playing Linfield in the first round at 3:00pm on Friday May 2.This is the
fourth year in a row the slugs have received a bid for the NCAA tournament.

Women's Tennis Start Division III Portion
of Their Season 4-1
After going 0-4 in the beginning of the season against
all Division 1 and Division 2 opponents, the slugs have started off their DIII
part of the season with a strong start.After dropping a close decision to
the top ranked team in the west, Santa
Cruz is currently on a four match win streak.Their
first victory was a convincing 9-0 win over the University
of LaVerne in southern California.

Women's Tennis Has Successful Fall ITA
Tournament
The 2007-2008 season for the slugs has started
with a successful showing at the Fall Regional ITA tournament at the Claremont
and Pomona colleges.Going into the tournament, three of our players were ranked
in the singles draw.Jessica Ruth (senior) was the #3 seed, Megan Sweeney (senior)
was the #6 seed, and Kyla Rowe (sophomore) was the #12 seed.In the doubles
draw, Kyla Rowe and Chayla Furlong (senior) were the #4 seed, and Jessica Ruth
and Megan Sweeney were the #2 seed.The slugs received eight entries into the
tournament and three of them were freshmen. (more)

Three Tennis Players Receive ITA Scholar
Athlete Awards
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association released today
the 2007 ITA Scholar Athletes Awards. UC Santa Cruz found three of their own
athletes among this years list. This year's recipients were Ilya Gendelman and
Matt Seeberger from Men's Tennis and Emily Cook from Women's Tennis. Below is
