Behind Berkness’s first start of the season, Slugs win by 29 points, 79-56 over the Pioneers.

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- UC Santa Cruz earned its first victory of the season with a win over Pacific Union, at the Hotel Paradox Opening Weekend Kickoff at Kaiser Permanente Arena last Sunday. The final score was 79-56. The Slugs never gave up the lead, as they were lead by top scorers sophomore Austin Steadman with 16 points and Tyler Berkness. It was the freshmen, Tyler Berkness's first start of the season and he came up big, with 14 points and was 64% from 3 Point land. Throw in fellow freshmen Ilan Zur's near double double, scoring 9 points with team leading 8 Rebounds and the bench lead by Spencer Wells and Marshall Arnwine Jr., and the Slugs never looked back.  The only thing that slowed the Slugs down was an unfortunate injury to #30 Dylan Holler, wishing him a full recovery.

Look out for their next game as the Men's Basketball team enters the Hilton Slugs Winter Tournament back at the Kaiser Permanente Arena. The Slugs first face the Linfield Wildcats. Then based on both their outcome of the game, and the outcome of the tournament game, the winner or loser of St. Vincent and Cal-Tech.
