Bruins Rain Threes On Banana Slugs in Double Digit Victory

NEWBERG (12-12) – UC Santa Cruz played their first game of their weekend long trip to Oregon as they took on George Fox University. George Fox would hit fifteen three pointers and outscore the Banana Slugs by double digits in the second half to win 80-64.  

Both teams lost their last game. UC Santa Cruz lost 73-64 to California Lutheran University on Sunday in Thousand Oaks while George Fox lost 79-64 to Pacific University in Forest Grove last Saturday.

In the first half, the Bruins would start the game on a 6-0 run on the strength of two three pointers - one by Jonathan Doutt and one by Ryan Thistlewood. The Banana Slugs would get their way back into the ballgame and would take the lead, at 10-9, on an Adam Marlow jumper with 15:31 left in the half. The Bruins would gain their largest lead at six, at 23-17, on a Mason Green-Richards layup with 10:58 left in the half. The Banana Slugs would get back into the ballgame, once again, and would take their largest lead of the ballgame at four, at 27-23, on a Will Crain layup with 7:41 left in the half. The two teams would trade baskets for the remainder of the half. The Bruins would lead 42-39 at the halftime intermission.

In the second half, the two teams would trade the lead back and forth. The Banana Slugs would take their largest lead of the half at one, at 43-42, on a Crain tip in with nineteen minutes left in the game. The Bruins would take the lead for good, at 48-45, on a Thistlewood three pointer with 16:46 remaining. The Banana Slugs would come as close as one, at 56-55, on a Crain layup with 9:05 left. The Bruins would expand their lead to double digits, at 67-57, on a Joshua Caddel three pointer with 5:43 left. The Bruins would gain their largest lead of the ballgame at sixteen on two occasions; the second occasion at 80-64 on a Thistlewood free throw with forty-four seconds left. The Bruins won 80-64, sending the Banana Slugs to their fifth consecutive defeat.

Crain had seventeen points for the Banana Slugs. Thomas Rico had a game high twenty points for the Bruins. Sam Gabbard and Jared Ponce both had ten points in the loss. Doutt and Green-Richards had thirteen points and Thistlewood had ten for the Bruins.

The Banana Slugs shot 45.2% (28-62) from the field, 20% (2-10) from the three-point line and was 42.9% (6-14) from the free throw line. The Bruins shot 46% (29-63) from the field, 51.7% (15-29) from the three-point line and 70% (7-10) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced eight turnovers by the Kingsmen scoring two points off the turnovers while the Bruins' defense forced eleven turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring eight points off the turnovers. UC Santa Cruz outrebounded George Fox 42-35 but the Banana Slugs had fifteen more second chance points (17-2) than did the Bruins.

The next game for the Banana Slugs will be tomorrow as they take on Linfield College in McMinnville. Tipoff is set for 5 pm.
