LANCASTER- Jared Ponce joined some elite company and helped UC Santa Cruz get a big win.
The senior from Chino Hills scored 16 to be one of three Slugs in double-figures as UCSC outlasted West Coast Baptist 90-82 Saturday night in Lancaster.
The 90 points are the most the Slugs have scored this season as UCSC rebounded from two losses New Years' Weekend to improve to 6-12 on the year.
Ponce now has 1,011 points in his career, the ninth Banana Slug men's player to reach the 1000-point milestone.
The game had 14 lead changes and was tied at 42 at the half despite UCSC shooting 60% in the half. UCSC pulled away late, never trailing in the second half and by as much as 10 before WCBC made some late shots in the last two minutes for the final margin.
UCSC finished shooting 53% (34-64) from the field in the game.
West Coast Baptist was led by Imaan Foster with 32 points. Daniel Foster added 22 for the Eagles.
UCSC has ten days off before their next home game as they return to Kaiser Permanente Arena Jan. 19 to take on Pacific Union.
