Keelhaulers Sink Banana Slugs

SANTA CRUZ (1-27) – UC Santa Cruz came off their eight day break as they hosted NAIA opponent CSU Maritime Academy at Kaiser Permanente Arena. The Keelhaulers would lead through a majority of the ballgame and would win 75-64.

In their last game, UC Santa Cruz lost 88-82, in double overtime, to Pacific Union College in Santa Cruz on Tuesday while CSU Maritime won 90-73 over La Sierra University on Saturday in Riverside.

In the first half, the two teams would trade baskets for the first twelve minutes. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the ballgame at two, at 22-20, on a Will Crain dunk with 9:27 left in the half. The Keelhaulers would take the lead for good, at 24-22, on a Clayton White jumper with 7:20 left in the half. The Keelhaulers would gain their largest lead of the half at seven on two occasions; the second occasion coming at 34-27 on a Daniel Radford three pointer with fifty-nine seconds left. The Keelhaulers would lead 34-29 at the halftime intermission.

In the second half, the Keelhaulers would continue to extend their lead. The Keelhaulers would gain a double digit lead, at 50-39, on a Radford three pointer with 13:13 left. The Keelhaulers would gain their largest lead of the ballgame at 62-44 on an Austin Sayers layup with 9:38 left. The Banana Slugs would come as close as six on three occasions; the third occasion was at 67-61 on a Sam Gabbard free throw with 2:16 left. The Banana Slugs would get no closer though as the Keelhaulers won 75-64.

Gabbard and Jared Ponce both had a game high sixteen points for the Banana Slugs. Radford and White had eleven points apiece for the Keelhaulers. Crain had thirteen points in the loss. Travis Arenas and Kameron Hoyt both had ten for the Keelhaulers.

The Banana Slugs shot 40.8% (20-49) from the field, 31.3% (5-16) from the three-point line and was 82.6% (19-23) from the free throw line. The Keelhaulers shot 38.6% (27-70) from the field, 25% (5-20) from the three-point line and 76.2% (16-21) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced twelve turnovers by the Keelhaulers scoring thirteen points off the turnovers while the Keelhaulers' defense forced twelve turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring thirteen points off the turnovers. CSU Maritime outrebounded UC Santa Cruz 46-30 and the Keelhaulers had fourteen more points off the bench (33-19) than did the Banana Slugs.

The next game for the Banana Slugs will be Friday as they take on University of La Verne at Kaiser Permanente Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 pm.
