SANTA CRUZ - Willamette University chipped away at UC Santa Cruz and eventually over ran the hosts in a 65-61 win at the Mission Inn Thanksgiving Classic.
UCSC fell to 2-2 on the year and saw their two-game winning streak end. Willamette went to 1-1.
Up by eight at the break, UCSC led by as much as 16 with 10:31 left on back-to-back Corey Cilia and Adam Marlow three-pointers, but then Willamette finished the game on a 32-12 run for the comeback win,including the last 12 points of the game.
Willamette tied it at 61 on a Casey Thornton three with 40 seconds left,and took the lead on a steal and layup by Brendan McCullough with under 20 seconds left.
Gabbard led UCSC with a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds. Weston scored 7 points and had a team-high 10 boards to pass Greg Palmer for 10th place on the school's career chart with 384. Marlow finished with 8 points and six assists.
Thornton led three Bearcats in double figures with 13 points. Nico Troplent had 12.
Willamette plays La Verne on the last day of the classic Sunday while UC Santa Cruz faces Pacific Lutheran.
