Pioneers Top Banana Slugs

ANGWIN (1-15) – The Banana Slugs started a four game road trip as they took on NAIA member Pacific Union College in Angwin. The Pioneers defeated the Banana Slugs 83-74 to end the Banana Slugs' four game winning streak.

Both teams won their last game. The Banana Slugs won 94-65 over NCCAA member Bethesda University of California in Santa Cruz on Wednesday while the Pioneers won 82-79 over NAIA member Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott on Saturday.

In the first half, the Pioneers started the game on a 18-8 run capped by a Dreymon Jones basket with 13:03 left in the half. The Pioneers would gain their largest lead of the half at thirteen, at 23-10, on a Jones three pointer with 10:29 left in the half. The Banana Slugs would come as close as five, at 37-32, on a Tre Weston two-pointer with thirty-seven seconds left in the half. The Pioneers would lead 37-32 at the halftime break.

In the second half, the Pioneers would hold the Banana Slugs at arms' length. The Banana Slugs would come as close as one on two occasions; the second occasion at 45-44 on a Kyle Creighton basket with 14:11 left. From that point, the Pioneers would go on a 22-6 run, capped by a Jones three pointer, to give the Pioneers their largest lead of the ballgame at 67-50. The loss is the second in as many years for the Banana Slugs against the Pioneers.

Weston had a game high twenty-four points to lead the Banana Slugs. Chris Camper, off the bench, had seventeen points for the Pioneers. Sam Gabbard had sixteen points and Creighton had thirteen points in the loss. Jones, off the bench, had twelve, Jeremiah Blandin and Jayson Marquez had eleven apiece and Rae Hubbard had ten for the Pioneers.

The Banana Slugs shot 49.2% (30-61) from the field, 15.4% (2-13) from the three-point line and were 63.2% (12-19) from the free throw line. The Pioneers shot 52.6% (30-57) from the field, 54.5% (12-22) from the three-point line and 84.6% (11-13) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced seventeen turnovers by the Pioneers scoring twenty one points off the turnovers while the Pioneers' defense forced seventeen turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring twenty one points off the turnovers. UC Santa Cruz outrebounded Pacific Union 32-26 while the Pioneers had twenty eight more points off the bench (40-12) than did the Banana Slugs.  

The next game for the Banana Slugs will be Wednesday as they take on University of Redlands in Redlands at 5 pm.
