Men's basketball sets single season wins record in 72-52 rout over La Verne

LA VERNE - UC Santa Cruz shot 50.8% from the field in a 72-52 win over La Verne Wednesday night.

The Banana Slugs improved to 14-6, the best start ever over 20 games and set the school record for wins in a season with five game left to play. The Class of 2018 became the first senior class in UCSC history to reach 48 wins in their four-year career.

The game was close for the first three minutes. Then with the score ted at 6, the Banana Slugs went on a 19-0 run, bookended by Sam Gabbard's layup with 6:28 left until halftime that made it 25-6 and the hosts never got closer than 16 the rest of the way.

Senior Tre Weston led UCSC with 22 points on 10-17 shooting. Freshman Haakon Ullrich added a career-high 10 points on a perfect 5-for-5 from the field.

Victor Costa had 14 points to lead the Leopards, who dropped to 0-17.

UCSC finish their midweek so Cal trip Thursday evening at La Sierra.
