RIVERSIDE -

UCSC Banana Slugs faced a tough competitor in their away game against La Sierra, losing only by a score of 70-68.

The loss gave UCSC their 7th loss for the season bringing their record to 14-7, and La Sierra their 6th win making them 6-15.

The game started off with both teams fighting for the lead, however La Sierra would quickly go on a 19-0 run and create a 30-12 lead before going into the half up 45-27. In the first half, the Banana Slugs shot 46.2% from the field and scored 27 points to La Sierra's 48.7% and 45 points.

Battling back from that 18-point deficit, the Slugs would make 41 points in the second half. The Slugs fought until the end, however.

With 2:18 remaining and UCSC down 70-59, Adam Marlow was on the free-throw line and made 1/2. Kyle Creighton then hit a 3-point jump shot after a turnover and brought it to 63-70. Another La Sierra turnover resulted in 2 points by Marlow. A rebound by Marlow led a 2-pointer by Sam Gabbard, who was fouled and finished the three-point play making the score to 68-70 with 54 seconds left. La Sierra missed another shot and Gabbard got the rebound with 24 seconds left and a chance to tie or win. However, Tre Weston missed the tying shot at 13 seconds and La Sierra ran out the clock for the win.

Gabbard was the top scorer for the Slugs shooting 8-14 for a total of 23 points to go with 10 rebounds. Weston finished with 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Creighton scored 13 points.

UCSC finished their final road-trip 2-2 and will return to Kaiser Permanente Arena on February 3rd for their next game against West Coast Baptist.
