Gabbard sets school single-game rebound record as men's basketball wins against West Coast Baptist

SANTA CRUZ - Sam Gabbard had a double-double with11 points and a school-record 22 rebounds in a wire-to-wire 80-63 win over West Coast Baptist.

UC Santa Cruz ran its record win total to 15-7 on the season. The Eagles fell to 4-17.

 Gabbard broke the record of 19 boards set last year by Tre Weston, which broke a record that stood for over 30 years.

"Going into this game coach wanted me to focus on rebounds," said Gabbard after the game. "Even if you struggle offensively, you can always dictate how hard you go to the boards."

The Banana Slugs scored the first nine points of the game and opened up a 17-4 lead 6:05 into the contest. West Coast Baptist started making shots and got within 37-27 at halftime.

The Eagles hit a three out of halftime to get within 37-30. West Coast Baptist trailed by ten with 4:15 left but the Slugs finished strong with a 13-6 run to close the game, holding the Eagles to just one field goal.

Weston scored a team-high 13 points to go with 8 rebounds. Adam Marlow scored 11 points and Kyle Creighton had 10. UCSC had a 56-41 rebounding advantage.

Daniel Foster led the Eagles with 25 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals before fouling out. The Eagles shot 14-37 from three-point range.

The Banana Slugs continue their four-game homestand with a game Monday against Pacific Union.

"We got three games coming up, and trying to stay sharp and locked in is the most important thing," said Gabbard.
