OVERLAND PARK, KS -Senior forward Sam Gabbard was named the Association of Division III Independents men's basketball Student-Athlete of the Month for February. The computer science major from Vacavilleconcluded the month averaging 20.5 points, 15.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game with four double-doubles on 61.5 percent shooting from the floor.
The award gave UCSC a clean sweep of the Association's monthly awards. It was the third SAOM honor for Gabbard this season and comes a month after January's award was won by teammate Tre Weston.
Gabbard scored a career-high 36 points on February 7th against Cal Lutheran going 14-of-19 from the floor. He also had a career-high and school record 22 rebounds against West Coast Baptist on February 3rd. The one-time Player of the Week during the month also had a career-high seven assists with 13 rebounds and 20 points in a win over Pacific Union on February 5th.
Gabbard ended the season with a school-record 266 rebounds, finishing in the top 25 nationally in rebounds per game and double-doubles.
