Sam Gabbard was named to the D3hoops.com All West Region Third team on Monday.
The Senior from Vacaville led UCSC in scoring (17.5) and rebounding (10.6) this season, starting every game as the Banana Slugs set the school single-season win mark.
"There is no doubt that Sam is one of the nation's elite players," said head coach Ron Dubois.
Sam becomes the first UCSC men's player to garner All-Region in the 17 year history of D3hoops.com. The West comprises 48 Division III schools stretching from the West Coast to the Mississippi River. Players were nominated by the Sports Information Directors at the various schools. There were 120 All-region players chosen from more than 680 players nominated nationwide. The ballot was then made available to SIDs, who voted for a predetermined number of players in their region.
After missing all of last season, Sam ranked in the top 25 nationally in rebounds and double-doubles while setting the school rebounding records for single-game and single-season.
"Sam has been through so much in his career at UCSC. In his 4 years here he has overcome 2 seasons missed with substantial injuries," Dubois said. Perseverance, dedication, passion or words that best describe Sam. He has worked as hard as any athlete I've ever been around at getting stronger and growing his game.
"Not only do his individual statistics jump off the page but he led our team to unprecedented success in Slug Basketball history. "
