In front of a handful of their most dedicated fans on a beautiful Friday morning in Santa Cruz, the UCSC Men's Soccer team (13-1-0) scored early and often on their way to a 5-0 victory over NCAA Division II opponent Chaminade University (0-10-0).
In the 13th minute, Anthony Scarlett bent a ball nicely behind the Chaminade defense to find Steve Wondolowski. Wondolowski beat Chaminade keeper Darren Smith on the dribble and tapped in from a yard away for his ninth goal of the season. Drew Delis was next to get on the score sheet in the 36th minute, when he absolutely hammered a ball from 40 yards away to send the Slugs ahead 2-0.
UCSC added another goal just before half-time to make it 3-0. Tim Degrasse received a ball off of his chest and with his back to goal, before playing a square volley to find David Frank, who brought the ball out of the air nicely with his chest before driving it left-footed into the side netting.
Stefan Clemens was the first to score in the second half, when in the 71st he received a Davey Cochrane corner kick and struck well with his left foot, sending the ball off of the far post before it went in. In the 86th minute, Wondolowski used a corner kick to find Jason Lent, who headed in what would be the final goal of the day.
Jared Wheeler, Brandon Brooks, and Matt Mahawold split time between the sticks for the Slugs' 12th shut-out of the season.
UCSC travels to Hayward on Saturday, October 14 to take on rival CSU East Bay at 1:00 PM.
