Men's Soccer Defeats Augsburg 3-1

MINNEAPOLIS (10/21/07) -- Scoring goals off a steal, penalty kick and free kick, the University of California-Santa Cruz claimed a 3-1 victory over host Augsburg College in a nonconference men's soccer game on Sunday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

Matt Fondy (Fr., Foster City, Calif./Burlingame HS) scored an unassisted goal off a steal of a defensive pass in the penalty box in the 10th minute, Jeremy Abrams (Sr., Los Alamitos, Calif.) scored on a penalty kick in the 18th minute, and Harry Abraham (Sr., Encino, Calif./Crespi Carmelite HS) scored on a free kick by Drew Delis (So., Encinitas, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) for the Banana Slugs, now 14-4-0 overall. California-Santa Cruz is ranked No. 7 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America West Region rankings.

Augsburg (9-7-0 overall) gained its lone goal in the 87th minute, as Kelsey Duerr (So., Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) headed home a corner kick by Matt Bowman (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.).

Despite the loss, numerous Augsburg players gained valuable experience against a strong opponent in the nonconference game, setting the team up for its most important week of the season this week. Augsburg remains in the hunt for a spot in the four-team Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs, but must win both of its remaining games -- a home game against St. John's on Wednesday (10/24) at 7:30 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field and a road game at Macalester on Saturday (10/27) at 7:30 p.m. -- and hope for losses by teams ahead the league standings. Two teams -- Carleton and Gustavus -- have already clinched spots in the conference playoffs, and six teams remain alive for the two remaining postseason spots.

Twenty Augsburg players saw playing time in Sunday's game, and the Auggies remained close throughout the contest. California-Santa Cruz claimed a 19-17 advantage in shots and 10-7 edge in corner kicks. Evan Fuhs (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) collected five saves in goal for the Auggies, while Jared Wheeler (Sr., Arcata, Calif.) claimed seven saves for the win for the Banana Slugs.

Duerr had six shots in the game for the Auggies, while James See (Jr., Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels HS), Andrew Seidel (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) and Ryan Sorensen (So., Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) had two shots each. Peter Schellenbarger (Jr., San Diego, Calif./University of San Diego HS) led the Banana Slugs with four shots, while Fondy and Abraham had three shots each.
