SANTA CRUZ, CA -- Santa Cruz, CA – Friday's match-up in Santa Cruz had the Lancers from California Baptist University come to town to face the unbeaten Slugs of UC Santa Cruz. The Slugs with an overtime win just a day previous against Concordia University had improved their record to 6-0-1, while the Lancers came in 1-1-3 in a tough NAIA conference.
The first half of the match was played mostly in the Slugs defensive end with most of the opportunities coming from Cal Baptist. Going into halftime the scored was 0-0 with the shots in the Lancer's favor at 6-1. It was Slug goalkeeper Brian Lafaille, a junior seeing his first start that kept the Slugs in the match.
The second half saw improved play on both ends, but it was the Slugs who finally broke the scoreless tie in the 74th minute when junior Matt Fondy scored his 5th goal of the season on a great cross from fellow team mate Evan Chambers. The game would finish at 1-0 in the Slugs favor, improving the unbeaten record to 7-0-1. Junior goalkeeper Brian LaFaille had 2 saves on the day. UCSC will get ready to face Menlo College on Tuesday the 22nd, and try to keep their number 7 NSCAA National D3 Ranking.
