SPOKANE, WA --Cameron Bushey scored on a free kick from just outside the penalty box 15 minutes into the second half and Brian Sherpe made five saves to lift Whitworth to a 1-0 win over visiting UC Santa Cruz in a non-conference men's soccer match on Monday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
In a match up of two teams that participated in the 2009 NCAA Division III tournament, the Pirates improved to 2-0 this season while the Banana Slugs fell to 1-1-2.
A tightly played first half was followed by a more open second half. After only four total shots in the first half, none on goal, UCSC had a slim 8-7 edge in shots in the second period.
Whitworth's Justin Mikkola was fouled from behind as he broke free in the middle of the field just outside the penalty box. Bushey took the free kick and sent the ball over the wall and inside the left post in the 61st minute for his first goal of the season.
Sherpe made four of his saves after the Pirates scored. Two were difficult stops - the first on a hard shot from distance by Harrison Foster that he knocked over the cross bar with eight and a half minutes to play. The second was a diving save on a point-blank shot by Fernando Otero after a scramble in front of the goal.
While Whitworth finished with eight shots, the only shot on goal was Bushey's free kick. UCSC keeper Matt Pereira did not have to make another save in the match.
Earlier in the day Augsburg (Minn.) defeated Pacific Lutheran 3-0 on Whitworth's Omache Field.
