ATHERTON, CA --The UCSC Men faced a surprisingly challenging foe on Wednesday when they played bay area NAIA school Menlo College. The Slug Men were scored on right off the bat off a quick turnover in the midfield, that lead to a goal for Menlo. The Slugs were caught off guard and realized quickly that their hot Wednesday afternoon was going to be a grudge match. Most of the play went the Slugs way the rest of the game with shots favoring the Slugs. It was senior Matt Fondy that scored to tie the game for the Slugs off a corner kick header in the first half.
The second half saw much of the play still favoring the Slugs, and it paid off when again senior Matt Fondy scored his second goal of the day making the game 2-1 in favor of UCSC. However, the determination of the Menlo College Men paid off in the 89th minute when they slotted one past Slug keeper Brian LaFaille, making the game 2-2. Of course with the play constantly in the Menlo College defense the Slug Men thought it only time till they put one away in overtime, but it wasn't to happen. The final on the day was a 2-2 draw taking the Slug Men to 0-2-1, and still winless in the season.
