SPOKANE, WA --Sunday's match at beautiful Whitworth College in Spokane WA brought great frustration for the Banana Slugs. The Slug Men's Soccer Team faced rival Pacific Lutheran University from Tacoma WA. Last season the two teams had quite the grudge match in Tacoma that saw the Slugs pulling out a late winner in the final minutes of overtime. This season karma seemed to get the Slugs right back.
PLU came out strong and scored a quick and head-turning goal in the 3rd minute of regulation. A stunned UCSC team knew that the battle they had to face was to be a hard up-hill battle, that may or may not see glory in the end. The Slugs did battle hard however turning a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead by the middle of the 2nd half off a great finish by sophomore Aaron Surrey. Senior DJ Hill finished a beautiful full field run forward mid way through the first half to level the game 1-1. However, it was PLU that saw fame in the end by scoring a very late tying goal in 89th minute! After several unsuccessful attacks at goal throughout the last 15 minutes from UCSC, it was PLU that used their very last bit of energy to slip one past the Slugs and send the game into overtime.
Overtime saw much of the ball at both ends, but a hard fast-paced game looked to take it's final toll on all the players. With only 4 shots total from both teams in all of overtime, the game ended in a 2-2 draw. A disappointing draw for the Slugs, and a hard fought redeeming tie for PLU.
