SANTA CRUZ, CA --Saturday at UCSC was looked upon as a tough and must-win match for the Slugs. However, only one of those views remained correct after the end of the match with visiting University of Dallas. University of Dallas has been a consistent must-win for UCSC in the past. Both programs being DIII Independent teams, it has become very important for these programs to knock one another off to reach a National Tournament birth at the end of the season. Both teams knowing what was at stake, it was the Slugs who took their game to another level.
The Slugs wasted no time getting their scoring off the ground with a goal by junior captain Cody Pillon, assisted by senior captain Dan Seltzer in just the 19th minute. The gates seemed to open for the Slugs when freshman Neil Hetzel scored his second on the weekend in the 29th minute from senior Fernando Otero. Pillon and Hetzel would both follow with more goals in the 34th and 39th minutes and at the half it was 4-0 in favor of the Slugs. The visiting Crusaders managed to get one on the board in the 49th minute, but the goal was nulled by freshman Phillip Murphy opening up his goal account for the Slugs in the 60th minute.
With a 3 game winning streak the Slugs have found themselves on a high after this weekend. Many new faces have added tremendous contributions and the Slugs lock their arms together to begin the second half of the season. The Slugs travel to Occidental University next weekend for another must-win DIII match. Then it's off to Texas the week after to take on heavyweight Trinity University a week later, where their true test will take place.
