SPOKANE, WA --UCSC traveled to Spokane WA Friday for a three game weekend to kick off their Division III season. Coming off two tough games against DI heavyweights San Jose State, Cal Poly, and a challenging NAIA Menlo College. The Slug Men came to Washington with something to prove when they faced Whitman College of Wala Wala Washington.
It was the Slugs who scored first in the 2nd minute with hard pressure and smooth passing right off the bat. Senior CJ Villalobos tallied his first goal of the season from a pass by striking partner Matt Fondy. The Slugs seemed to be the dominant team throughout the rest of the half taking time to play their offensive game, and putting hard tackles on the Whitman Men. The Slugs scored their second right before the end of the first half through Senior Clayton Sorensen. Sorensen's first goal of the season was played from fellow attackers CJ Villalobos and Matt Fondy.
The second half was much of the same for the Slugs. They saw a third goal tallied from a cracker of a shot by center midfielder and senior Fernando Otero in the 50th minute. The Whitman men managed to get one goal back off a deflection in the 70th minute, but the comeback attempt was put out quick when senior Matt Fondy tallied his fourth goal of the season off a free kick from senior Evan Chambers in the 76th minute. The Slugs came away with not only their first win of the season, but also their first Division III win. The Slugs now look to Sunday where they face formidable opponents Pacific Lutheran College.
