SAN ANTONIO,TX--Saturday brought the Slug men to San Antonio Texas for a two game road trip against some pretty tough mid-western teams. The first match the Slugs had to face was against the talented side of Southwestern University. The Slugs had recently come off a 6 game win streak and were looking to extend the streak in breezy San Antonio. With storms rolling through the area the Slugs were hoping that playing conditions wouldn't be a factor.
The field and game turned out in the Slug Men's favor after all with a 3-2 victory against the Pirates. It was senior Matt Fondy that scored a tremendous "Hat Trick" on the day to take the Slugs to victory. The Slugs had tough competition from the Pirates though with Fondy scoring first off a nice left-footed slot past the keeper in the 13th minute, the Pirates answered in the 17th minute to tie. Fondy scored his second off a header cross from fellow senior Clay Sorensen in the 28th, bringing the Slugs into halftime with a 2-1 lead. However, the Pirates ties again right off the bat in the second half with a slotted ball through the Slug defense in just the 46th minute to make it 2-2. The Slugs mustered what they needed to in the end though and got a PK in the 74th minute however, and Fondy drilled one home for the win.
The Slugs now look to tomorrow where the number one scoring team in the nation on their home turf, against Trinity University. This challenge should show to be the hardest of the year for the Slugs, but a true test of where they are among the best in the nation.
