RIVERSIDE, CA --Sunday afternoon in Riverside was a hot and tiresome afternoon for the Slugs when they faced NAIA side La Sierra University, for the second match of the Slugs trip this past weekend. The Slugs came into the match off a tough loss to a strong NAIA team of California Baptist on Friday. The Golden Eagles of La Sierra came into the match at a record of 4-3-0, and looked to give the Slugs a tough match to finish their road trip.
The match itself favored the Slugs greatly with much of the possession in the Golden Eagles end, and shots favoring the Slugs. However, the Golden Eagles held strong only giving up one goal in the first half by senior Matt Fondy. The goal came off a nice combination of play between Fondy and fellow teammate Fernando Otero, in the 21st minute of play. After the Slugs goal there were several more unsuccessful chances on frame for the UCSC. The second half brought much of the same, with the Slugs pounding away to create chances, and the La Sierra attempting to take advantage of their limited chances in attack. However, neither team would slot another goal through, and the final score was 1-0 in the Slugs favor.
With their record now at 3-2-3, the Slugs now look to Friday's big match against independent rival Chapman College. The two long time rivals with square off up at UCSC at 4:00 Friday afternoon September the 24th.
