Occidental Sends Banana Slugs to First Defeat

LOS ANGELES (9-6) – Blake Mooney scored his first goal as a Banana Slug tonight. However, it was not enough as Occidental College scored three first half goals en route to a 5-1 victory over UC Santa Cruz.


The Banana Slugs were coming off a 0-0 tie with Chapman University on Friday in Orange. The Tigers were coming off a 1-0 win over Oberlin College in Los Angeles.


In the first half, the Tigers would strike early as Connor Freeman would score with 40:30 left to make the score 1-0 in favor of Occidental. Occidental would score again with 23:06 left in the half on a Morgan Bennett-Smith goal to make the score 2-0. UC Santa Cruz would respond fifty one seconds later on Mooney's goal to make the score 2-1 in favor of Occidental. The Tigers would add their third goal of the half on Brooks Yeager strike with 1:24 left in the half. The Tigers led at halftime at 3-1. The shot count favored the Tigers at 10-4 and the Tigers had more corner kicks at 4-3.


The Tigers kept the pressure on in the second half. With 25:13 left, Santiago Bedoya-Gallego scored to make the score 4-1 in favor of the Tigers. With 19:31 left, Thayer Fisher capped the scoring to make the score 5-1 in favor of Occidental. Occidental would win the match 5-1.


Mooney had two shots to lead the Banana Slugs while for Occidental, Zack Conrad and Freeman had a game high three shots. Tristan Cooper got the win for the Tigers while Conner Anderson received the loss for the Banana Slugs. The Tigers outshot the Banana Slugs 20-6 while the Banana Slugs had a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.


The Banana Slugs will now have five days between matches. The next match for the Banana Slugs will be Friday as they take on Willamette University in Salem. Kickoff is set for 7 pm.
