SALEM (9-13) – Whitworth University scored two second half goals as the Pirates defeated UC Santa Cruz in a 3-1 win. The match was held at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon.
Both teams were coming off wins in their last match. The Banana Slugs defeated Willamette University 3-1 on Friday in Salem while the Pirates defeated University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 1-0 on Thursday in Tacoma, Washington.
In the first half, the Pirates would hit the back of the net first as Jonah Snyder scored on a header to give the Pirates 1-0 with 37:43 left in the half. Both teams would each other at bay for the remainder of the half as the Pirates would lead 1-0 going into the halftime intermission. The shot count was even at 4-4 while the Pirates had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Just like the first half, the Pirates would score first. Snyder would score again with 31:32 left in the match to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. The Banana Slugs would get a goal back with 28:39 left in the match on an Octavio Rodriguez penalty kick to cut the Pirates' lead to 2-1. With 13:48 left remaining, the Pirates would add their final goal of the match on an Alfredo Omelas shot to give the Pirates a 3-1 lead. The Banana Slugs would have one more chance to add a goal but Samuel Horton's shot went wide of the net. The Pirates won the match 3-1.
Conrad Rowling had a game high three shots to lead the Banana Slugs while for Whitworth, Snyder also had a game high three shots. Timmy Costa got the win for the Banana Slugs while Conner Anderson received the loss for the Banana Slugs. The Pirates outshot the Banana Slugs 11-8 and had a 9-8 advantage in corner kicks.
The Banana Slugs' next match is Tuesday as they take on Pacific University in Forest Grove. Kickoff is set for 1 pm.
