REDLANDS (9-27) – UC Santa Cruz extended their unbeaten streak to three as they tied University of Redlands 1-1 in Redlands as they began their six match road trip.
In their last match, the Banana Slugs defeated NCAA Division II opponent Dominican University last Sunday in Santa Cruz while the Bulldogs tied California Lutheran University 2-2 yesterday in Redlands.
In the first half, the first thirty minutes played at a back and forth pace. The Bulldogs would strike first on an Alexander Knox goal with 14:46 remaining in the half to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. The Banana Slugs would have two chances before the end of the half to tie the match but Julio Demara's shot was blocked and Reed Miller's shot went wide right. The Bulldogs led 1-0 at the halftime intermission.
The second half was offensive oriented as both teams took nine shots in the half. The Banana Slugs would tie the match with 31:58 left in the match on a Dominique Royall second-chance off a corner kick from Miller to tie the match at 1-1. Neither team could find the back of the net before the end of regulation and the match went into overtime tied at 1-1.
In the overtime frames, Redlands had three shots at the net but were not able to convert. The two teams played two overtimes and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Four players (Brandon Flores, Miller, Jacob Myers Norys and Octavio Rodriguez) had two shots apiece to lead the Banana Slugs while for Redlands, Chase Boone had a match high seven shots. The Bulldogs outshot the Banana Slugs 17-15 and had three fewer fouls (16-13) than did the Banana Slugs.
The Banana Slugs' next match is Saturday as they take on University of La Verne. Kickoff is set for 4 pm.
