#7 Tigers Defeat Banana Slugs

SAN ANTONIO (10-30) – UC Santa Cruz started their trip to the Alamo City as they took on NSCAA NCAA Division III #7 Trinity University. The Tigers scored two goals in the first half and the Banana Slugs could not overcome the deficit as the Tigers won 3-1.

In their last match, the Banana Slugs tied Pomona Pitzer in Pomona 2-2 last Saturday while the Tigers defeated Southwestern University 2-0 in Georgetown on Sunday.

For the first twenty minutes of the match, neither team could gain an offensive advantage. With 19:16 left in the first half, the Tigers would strike first on a goal by Christian Sakshaug to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Sakshaug and Tigers would strike again just under four minutes of clock time later as the Tigers extended their lead to 2-0. The Banana Slugs would trim the Tigers' lead to 2-1 on a Jacob Myers Norys breakaway goal with 7:49 remaining in the half. It was the first goal Trinity had surrendered at home this season.

Although both teams had shots at the net, neither team would score again before the end of the half as the Tigers led at halftime 2-1.

In the second half, both teams would play back and forth soccer for the first twenty five minutes of the half. The Tigers would add their final goal of the match on a Ryan Hunter goal to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead with 24:43 left in the match.

"We worked our way back into the game and found more possession of the ball and created several good opportunities," said head coach Mike Runeare.

"We continued to push numbers forward until we gave up a third goal late." The Banana Slugs would have several opportunities to score but their shots went wide or were saved.

Conrad Rowling had three shots to lead the Banana Slugs while for Trinity, Jorge Villamarin and Laurence Wyke both had a match high four shots. Chad Margotta got the win for the Tigers while Connor Anderson got the loss for the Banana Slugs. The Tigers outshot the Banana Slugs 21-9 and had five more corner kicks (7-2) than did the Banana Slugs.

The Banana Slugs will have less than twenty four hours to prepare for their next match as they will take on Southwestern University tomorrow in San Antonio. Kickoff is set for 5 pm.
