SANTA CRUZ (10-9) – The Banana Slugs played their second of two matches at home as they took on Carthage College. The Red Men used two first half goals to defeat the Banana Slugs 3-1.
Both teams won their last match. The Banana Slugs won 2-1 over NCAA Division II member Holy Names University in Santa Cruz on Thursday while the Red Men defeated Wheaton College 4-2 in Kenosha on Wednesday.
In the first half, the Red Men scored first. With 34:54 left in the half, Johnny Rimkus took a pass from Jeff Montemayor and hit the back of the net to give the Red Men a 1-0 lead. With 14:31, the Red Men would score again on a Freddy Martinez header after a corner by Austin Bitta to give the Red Men a 2-0 lead. The Banana Slugs' last chance of the half to score came on a header by Nathaniel Payne but the ball went just wide of the net. The Red Men would lead 2-0 at the halftime intermission.
In the second half, the Red Men would add another tally. With 35:48 left in regulation, Bitta scored after a give and go with Montemayor to give the Red Men a 3-0 lead. The Banana Slugs would get a goal back late in the match. With 6:06 left, Carlos Mezquita scored after a pass from Cole Fox trimming the Red Men lead to 3-1. The Red Men won the match 3-1.
Jacob Myers Norys and Payne both had two shots to lead the Banana Slugs while for Carthage, Bitta had a match high five shots. Brayan Arce Justiniano got the win for the Red Men while Andrew Pimentel got the loss for the Banana Slugs. The Red Men outshot the Banana Slugs 12-7 while the Banana Slugs had nine fewer fouls (18-9) than did the Red Men.
The Banana Slugs will have their next match on Wednesday as they will head back on the road to take on NAIA member UC Merced in Merced. Kickoff is set for 3 pm.
