KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced on Thursday, Oct. 6 that the UCSC men's soccer team earned the Team Academic Award for the 2015-16 academic year.
This marks the 5th year in a row and the 8th time since 2007 that the men's soccer team has received this honor. In addition to 2015, the Slugs were also awarded the NSCAA Team Academic Award in 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014.
The Slugs were one of 893 soccer teams (315 men, 578 women) to earn the NSCAA Academic Award with an overall GPA of 3.38. Their GPA was the 38th highest in the nation for all universities in addition to being the highest in the UC system, beating University of California, San Diego which had a team GPA of 3.18.
Men's soccer joins women's soccer as a part of an elite group of NSCAA double-honorees. The women's program was honored with a 3.24 overall team GPA which was the highest women's team GPA in the UC system edging out the University of California.
The NSCAA Team Academic Award is given to those teams that exemplify a strong commitment to academics, recognizing teams with an overall grade-point-average of 3.0 or higher during the 2015-2016 academic year. The award is a reflection of the strong emphasis that the team places on academics and their role as student-athletes.
"This reinforces the type of student-athletes we recruit and that make up our program, " said Head Coach Mike Runeare. "Their ability and dedication to excellence is a testament to the strength of our team to create and meet objectives".
"From the beginning of the year we set high goals for academic success. Preparing, managing, and helping all our athletes balance the commitment to athletics while focusing on the importance of academics is prime objective of ours from the start. We ensure that the focus for all of our athletes is that they are a student-athlete, they are a representative of our athletic department, and they are a representative of the University of California, Santa Cruz."
With these awards, the men's and women's soccer programs continue the long history of academic success with the athletic department at UC Santa Cruz. This past year alone the women's basketball team posted a team GPA of 3.71 which was 4th highest in the nation. In addition, 14 teams achieved a 3.00 GPA or higher during the 2015-2016 year with an overall student-athlete GPA of 3.20.
