GEORGETOWN, TX - Goals by Lukas Holocher in each half gave the UC Santa Cruz men's soccer team a 2-1 win over Southwestern University.
The Banana Slugs close out their 2016 campaign with a 4-11-2 record.
Two days after a loss to top-ranked Trinity, the Slugs started slow. They allowed the Pirates six shots in the first 21 minutes, including one that careened off the post. However goalkeeper Christian Deguzman had a pair of saves to keep the score 0-0.
Holocher got his first goal of the year in the 34th minute, just five minutes after coming on as a substitute. He cooly converted a penalty to give the Slugs the lead and tally his first goal as a Banana Slug.
The Pirates' offensive pressure paid off with an equalizer in the 66th minute from Justin Cruz. Both teams then pressed for the winning goal. UCSC came close in the 73rd minute, but Carlos Mezquita's shot was saved by SU.
The Slugs got the winning goal in the 83rd minute when Holocher collected from Shawn DiRocco's corner and knocked it to the opposite post to make it 2-1. Southwestern's last chance with :31 seconds left went over the bar before the Slugs could breathe a sigh of relief and run out the clock for the road victory.
"Great win, I'm very proud of everyone . They played with a lot of emotion and it was a fitting result for our seniors," said head coach Mike Runeare.
"The team stayed focused and showed their ability, and the result was reflective of our ability."
