Wildcats’ First Half Goals Top Banana Slugs

CHICO (10-7) – The Banana Slugs continued their eight-match road trip as they traveled to Chico to take on NCAA Division II member Chico State University. The Wildcats scored a pair of first half goals and defeated the Banana Slugs 2-0.

In the first half, the Wildcats would get on the scoreboard with 28:48 left. Jeremiah Egujie scored from six yards out after assists from Alex Fluitt and Fabian Roman to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. The Banana Slugs had a chance with 9:49 left in the half on a header by Ari Statler, but the shot was saved by Wildcats' goalie Damion Lewis. With 4:08 left in the half, the Wildcats added their final tally when Samuel Licona scored after pass from Garrett Hogbin and Eddie Zecena.

In the second half, the match was played at a back and forth pace. The final shot of the match for the Banana Slugs came with 34:46 left off the foot of Keith McCarty but his shot was blocked. The Banana Slugs had two corner kicks in the final ten minutes of play but neither corner kick resulted in a shot attempt.

McCarty and Statler had two shots apiece to lead the Banana Slugs while Zachary Lamb had a career-high seven saves in goal to keep UCSC close.

The Banana Slugs will make a return trip to Southern California to take on Chapman University in Orange on Friday. Game time is set for 7:30 pm.
