WHITTIER, CA - UC Santa Cruz started a two game trip to Southern California today as they took on Whittier College in Whittier. The Banana Slugs came back from 3-0 down to win 5-4 over the Poets.
Of the six singles matches played, the Banana Slugs won five and the Poets won one. In the #2 singles match, Chad Stone of UC Santa Cruz defeated David Stanko of Whittier 6-1, 6-1. In the #3 singles match, Kyle Richter of the Banana Slugs defeated Shogo Shimizu of the Poets 6-2, 6-3. In the #4 singles match, Alexander Flora of UC Santa Cruz defeated Troy Chavez of Whittier 6-0, 6-2. In the #5 singles match, Jimmy Soper of the Banana Slugs defeated Tyler Liscott of the Poets 6-2, 6-2. In the #6 singles match, Derek Levchenko of UC Santa Cruz defeated Ian Ross of Whittier 6-0, 6-3. The tightest singles match of the day was the #1 singles match between Max Littlejohn of UC Santa Cruz and Samuel Farmer of Whittier. Farmer won the match 0-6, 7-5, 11-9.
The Poets won all three doubles matches. Two of the doubles matches – the #1 doubles match between Chavez and Linscott of Whittier and Littlejohn and Richter of UC Santa Cruz and the #3 doubles match between Ross and Shimizu of Whittier and Sean Hollister and Chetan Munugala of UC Santa Cruz – were won by the Poets with a 9-8 score. In the #2 doubles match, the Poets' team of Farmer and Stanko defeated the Banana Slugs' team of Flora and Adrian Sirovica 8-0.
