SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif – UC Santa Cruz notched a huge win Saturday afternoon with a 7-2 win over NAIA Westmont to open the second half of the season at the Bay Club in San Luis Obispo, CA.
UCSC (1-1) swept the doubles matches over Westmont (0-1). No. 1 doubles came down to the wire as Slugs' Kyle Richter and Alexander Flora held off Carl-Phillip Lindqvist and Travis Kimsley 8-6 to start. UCSC followed it up in the No. 2 spot with an easy 8-3 win by Chad Stone and Derek Levchenko and Chad Leduff and Sean Hollister battled to an 8-5 win to clinch the point for the Slugs.
Despite losing two down-to-the-wire matches with No. 1 singles Stone losing to Lindqvist 7-5, 3-6, 10-8 and No. 3 singles Hollister falling to Christian Mathis 4-6, 6-1, 13-11, the Slugs were able to earn 4 points. Leduff locked in the first point for UCSC in the No. 2 spot, defeating Kimsey 6-2, 6-3. Flora kept the momentum to extend the Slugs' lead with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tommy Nightingale. Securing the victory, Levchenko defeated Jordan Strandness 6-3, 6-2 while Ryan Dugan beat David Akin 6-1, 6-4 to end the match.
"I was proud of our team today", said Head Coach Mike Napoli. "We didn't have our no.1 doubles so I put AJ Flora in Adrian's place. They pulled off a great win. The singles were equally impressive with smart aggressive play. All in all, a great first match performance. Now we'll prepare for our first home match against George Fox".
