NEWPORT BEACH, Cali – The 6th Annual Michael Chang Classic was recently played at Newport Beach Tennis club and other local tennis facilities. UCSC Tennis was represented by the doubles team of Chadwick Stone and Ryan Dugan.
After shaking off the rust of not playing with each other since the NCAA Nationals against CMS in May, Stone and Dugan made it to the finals after beating former 1 players from UC Irvine 6-4, 7-6.
"After the first match, Chad and I played some of the best doubles we have ever played together," said Dugan. "From then on we seemed to be lights out. It was great to be playing with Chad again. We know that we will be playing with each other this upcoming season so we wanted to get a head start before we got back. We had no inclination we would do as well as we did during the tournament."
In the finals, they eventually fell to Craig and Dequello who are currently playing for the University of Denver and UCLA 6-2, 6-3.
"Our new number 1 doubles team of Chad Stone and Ryan Dugan beat some outstanding talent in the Michael Chang Open," said head coach Mike Napoli. "They demonstrated why they're going to be our number one doubles team and a contender for All-American status."
Dugan and Stone have been working hard this summer and are eager to join their teammates this fall to continue their quest for the program's record 8th NCAA DIII Championship.
"This summer, I have been training with the coach at UCI and playing with some of the players on the UCI team. I am very excited for fall and to get back to school and back on the courts."
The Slugs first match is scheduled for September 29th at UC Irvine
