POMONA (10-2) – The Banana Slugs took part in the ITA Division III West Regional as they took on the best players in the NCAA Division III West Region. Individuals representing the Banana Slugs made the round of 32 in the individual competition while, in the doubles competition, they made the round of 32.
In the singles competition, in the round of 64, Antony Bello of Pomona Pitzer defeated Ryan Dugan 6-4, 7-6 (3). Spencer Chiu of Pomona Pitzer defeated Sean Hollister 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4). Chad Stone defeated Isaiah Byrd of Occidental College 6-2, 7-6 (5) and AJ Flora defeated Spencer Simonides of Pomona Pitzer 7-6 (6), 6-2. Pomona-Pitzer's Josh Gearou beat Chad Le Duff 7-6(3); 2-6; 6-1. In the round of 32, Maxwell Macey of Claremont Mudd Scripps defeated Stone 6-1, 6-2 and Flora defeated Jay Yeam of Claremont Mudd Scripps 6-2, 6-1. In the round of 16, Macey defeated Flora 6-1, 6-2.
In the second round singles consolation tournament, in the round of 16, Derek Levchenko defeated Parth Desai of Pomona Pitzer 7-6 (9), 6-4, Le Duff swept Cal Lutheran's Jake Haffner 6-2,6-0 and Stone defeated Matthew Mead of Chapman University 6-0, 6-3. In the quarterfinals, Bello defeated Levchenko 6-4, 2-6, 10-6 Le Duff defeated Hunter Kettering of Whittier 6-3, 6-0 and Redland's Andrew Leahy beat Dugan 6-4; 1-6; 10-8. In the semifinals, Le Duff beat Jake Berber of CMS 6-3,6-4. Le Duff's run ended in the consolation final against Avinash Vermuri of CMS 7-6(40, 6-4.
In the doubles competition, in the round of 64, the team of Glenn Hull and Nikolai Parodi of Claremont Mudd Scripps defeats the Banana Slugs' teams of Dugan and Stone 8-6. The Pomona-Pitzer team of Bello and Simonides defeated the team of Hollister and Le Duff 8-4. Flora and Levchenko of the Banana Slugs defeated Morgan Lebby and Connor Soohoo of California Institute of Technology 8-4. In the round of 32, Julian Gordy and Daniel Morkovine of Claremont Mudd Scripps defeated Flora and Levchenko 8-3. In the round of 16 Hollister and Le Duff edged Braaten and Hagler of Cal Lu 9-7. In the quarters, Hollister and LeDuff won 8-3 over Bicks and Hirsohn of host Pomona. Hollister and Le Duff beat You and Van Butselaar of Whittier in the semis and Bello and Simonides to win the consolation final.
The first dual match for Banana Slugs will be January 15th as they will take on NAIA member Westmont College in Santa Barbara. The first serve is set for 1 pm.
