SANTA BARBARA (1-15) – The Banana Slugs played their first regular season match as they took on NAIA member Westmont College in Santa Barbara. The Banana Slugs won all three doubles matches and won the match 7-2.
The Banana Slugs were coming off a 6-8 season that finished in the second round of the 2016 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis National Championships with a 5-0 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps while the Warriors finished with a 10-9 record and lost 5-1 in the second round of the NAIA Men's Tennis National Championships to Xavier University of Louisiana.
The Banana Slugs won four singles matches while the Warriors won two. In the #3 singles match between Derek Levchenko of UC Santa Cruz and JT Joens of Westmont, Levchenko defeated Joens 6-1, 6-4. In the #4 singles match between Sean Hollister of the Banana Slugs and Luke Barnard of the Warriors, Hollister defeated Barnard 6-4, 6-3. In the #6 singles match between Alexander Flora of UC Santa Cruz and Austin Lee of Westmont, Flora defeated Lee 6-2, 7-6. In the #2 singles match between Chad Le Duff of the Banana Slugs and Philipp Sibbel of the Warriors, Sibbel defeated Le Duff 6-3, 6-4. In the #5 singles match between Ryan Dugan of UC Santa Cruz and Jordan Strandness of Westmont, Strandness defeated Dugan 1-6, 6-4, 10-7. The tightest singles match of the day was the #1 singles match between Chadwick Stone of the Banana Slugs and Luke Whalen of the Warriors. Stone defeated Whalen 3-6, 7-6, 11-9.
As previously mentioned, the Banana Slugs won all three doubles matches. In the #2 doubles match between Hollister and Le Duff of UC Santa Cruz and Barnard and Lee of Westmont, Hollister and Le Duff defeated Barnard and Lee 8-2. The tightest doubles matches were the #1 doubles (Dugan and Stone of UC Santa Cruz versus Joens and Sibbel of Westmont) and the #3 doubles (Flora and Levchenko of UC Santa Cruz versus Strandness and Whalen of Westmont) matches. Each match was won by the Banana Slugs duo 8-6.
