SANTA CRUZ- The UC Santa Cruz men's team were swept by Nevada-Reno 7-0 in UCSC's home opener dual meet.
It was the third-straight Division I opponent for the Banana Slugs, who are now 1-3 in duals.
The Wolfpack took the well-fought doubles point. Chadwick Stone and Ryan Dugan were edged 7-5 at No. 1 and the No. 2 team of Sean Hollister/Chad Le Duff losing at 6-4. The competitive tennis continued in the singles events. Stone played close against Frenchman Julien Evrard of Nevada in a 7-5, 6-4 match. The No. 2 singles was just as close, with the Wolfpack's Augustin Delahodde holding off Le Duff 7-5, 6-3.
In the No. 3 singles,Derek Levchenko won the first set against Kostya Neserenko 6-2 before Neserenko rallied for two 6-3 wins. UNR's Mile Cilic eventually prevailed over Hollister at No. 4, winning the tie-breaker.
"Every match we were in the hunt," said head coach Mike Napoli. "We played close singles and doubles and I was very proud of the boys and their competitive spirit. It's always going to be 'process and progress'."
The Slugs go to southern California next weekend to take on Div. III rivals Redlands and Chapman.
