SANTA CRUZ - UC Santa Cruz lost to Division I Army-West Point 7-0 on Senior Day.
UCSC went to 4-4 in dual matches, with all their defeats to Division I opposition. Army-West Point (10-6) won their seventh straight dual match as they begin a three-match trip to northern California.
"It was an honor to have West Point here," said head coach Mike Napoli. "They're true gentlemen and ambassadors."
The Doubles were played under Division. I rules where the three matches equaled one point in the match. The No. 2 and No. 3 teams of Hollister/ Chad Le Duff and Levchenko /A.J. Flora both fell 6-2. Chad Stone and Ryan Dugan dropped the hard-played No.1 doubles match 7-5.
In Singles play, Stone lost at No. 1 6-1,6-1 to Army's Michael Ngyuen, a former Central Coast Section finalist from Leland High School. The Knights' Sam Lampman defeated Le Duff 6-3,6-2 at No. 2. Grant Reichmann beat Levchenko 6-3 6-4 at No. 3 while Greg Shannon outlasted Dugan at No. 6 6-4 6-2.
In the final two matches to finish, Hollister fought a back-and-forth match at No. 4 with Myles Conlin in a 6-3, 6-3 loss. At No. 5, A.J. Flora nearly grabbed his second Div. I win of the season in pushing 6'6" Nikita Pereverzin to a third tiebreaker set before falling 6-4, 6-7 10-7.
"They have players with special skills," said Napoli. "When you play a Division I team, there are things you learn so it's perfect for us."
