It was a productive weekend for UC Santa Cruz's five representatives in the ITA Western Regionals in Claremont.
The traditional start of the season for men's tennis had several positive performances.
Chad Le Duff and freshman Magnus Ibh both advanced to the last eight in the open singles. Le Duff advanced by beating Noah Forman of Colorado College and Lee Sadler of Chapman on Friday, but fell to top seed Jack Katzman of CMS 6-4,6-2 in the quarters.
Ibh beat 9th-seed Joshua Gearou of Pomona 7-5,6-4 in his first match, and then eased passed Hunter Kettering of Whittier 6-0, 6-1. He then won a wild quarterfinal against CMS's Jake Williams 6-7; 7-6(4); 6-3; before dropping his match to fourth-seed Jed Kronenberg of in straight sets.
A.J. Flora advanced to the consolation quarterfinals when Redlands's Noah Morrow withdrew, and then swept Colorado College's Sam Hum to get to the semis. His run finally ended against CMS's Alfred Simental.
Ryan Dugan and Chad Stone were seeded first in the doubles, and got through to Saturday by beating duos from Pomona-Pitzer and Whittier. Against 5th seeded Robert Liu and Daniel Park of CMS, the Slugs advanced 8-6 before falling in the semifinals 9-7.
"Once again these guys made a statement and we're looking to be on course to qualify for the Nationals," said a pleased head coach Mike Napoli.
Flora and Ibh went 1-1 in the main doubles draw before ending up in the consolation. In the semis, they ended their run with an 8-4 loss to Cal Lutheran's Lucas Tilly and Andrew Tufenkian.
