Holy Names outlasts men's tennis in exciting dual

SANTA CRUZ - After four hours of amazing back-and-forth tennis, Division II Holy Names survived UC Santa Cruz 5-4.

Before the match, UCSC honored departing seniors Gregory Alle, Magnus Ibh, A.J. Flora and Chad Stone.

Five of the six singles matches went into a third set, and two of the doubles needed an extra point. Stone came from behind to win at No. 2 over Hugo Colpart. That put the deciding point on the No. 5 singles which was simultaneously finishing.

The Slugs' Ryan Gee also battled in a comeback but fell to former German Regional Champion Valentin Baranyi 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5)

"Even though we came up short in the end on our senior day, I'm still proud of my teammates for fighting til the very end," said Stone. "No one ever gave up and that's all you can ask for. Overall, it was an exciting match to be a part of but we're all now focusing on our next match against Whitman."

The Banana Slugs visit Whitman in Walla Walla this Sunday the 15th.
