ROCHESTER, NY -- UC Santa Cruz played their final match in their third day in New York as the Banana Slugs took on Ramapo College. The Banana Slugs hit better than .430 and swept the Roadrunners 3-0.
The Banana Slugs were coming off a 3-0 win over Thiel College earlier today while the Roadrunners were coming off a 3-0 loss to the host Nazareth College earlier today as well.
In the first set, the Roadrunners started the match quickly with a 3-1 run, capped by a Banana Slugs' attack error. The Banana Slugs would take the lead at 10-9 after a Lake Merchen kill. The Roadrunners would take the lead back at 13-12 after a Banana Slugs' attack error. The two teams would play back and forth for the fourteen serves. The Banana Slugs would go on a 6-0 run to make the score 24-19 after a Roadrunners' attack error. The Banana Slugs won the first set 25-20 and took a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Banana Slugs led the second set from the beginning. The Banana Slugs started the set with a 3-0 run capped by a Roadrunners' attack error. The Banana Slugs would expand their lead to double digits, at 14-4, after a Jorge Reyes kill. The closest that the Roadrunners would come would be nine on two occasions; the second occasion coming at 15-6 after a Banana Slugs' service error. The largest lead of set for the Banana Slugs was fourteen at set point, at 25-11, after a Jake Landel kill. The Banana Slugs won the second set 25-11 and lead the match 2-0.
In the third set, the Roadrunners would take their largest lead of the set at one, at 1-0, after a Connor Brandow kill. The Banana Slugs took the lead for good at 2-1 after a Jake Howard kill. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead at nine, at 25-16, after a Banana Slugs' service ace. The Banana Slugs would win the third set 25-16 and win the match 3-0.
For UC Santa Cruz, Howard had a match high fourteen kills and for Ramapo, Spencer Shickora and Marinus Tavernier had six kills. Blake Chadwick had eighteen assists for UC Santa Cruz and Justin Feigeles had a match high twenty three for Ramapo. Jake Hurwitz led the Banana Slugs with a match high eight digs and Kurt MacDonald had five digs for the Roadrunners.
For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .431 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .682 while Ramapo had a .107 hitting percentage with the first set having the best percentage at .074. The Banana Slugs had seven more service aces (8-1) than did the Roadrunners.
The Banana Slugs will now have thirteen days before their next match. The Banana Slugs will take on Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The first serve will take place at 5:30 pm.
