#12 Stars Sweep #4 Banana Slugs

RIVER FOREST (2-5) – The Banana Slugs continued their Midwest road trip as took on AVCA NCAA Division III #12 Dominican University (IL). The Stars swept the hotly-contested match between the two top-ranked squads 3-0.

Both teams lost their last match. The Banana Slugs lost 3-0 to Carthage College yesterday in Kenosha while the Stars lost 3-2 to North Central College in River Forest on Tuesday.

In the first set, the two teams would trade points through the majority of the set. The Banana Slugs would take the lead at 9-8 on a Raymond Cascio kill. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at three on three occasions; the third occasion was at 13-10 on a Cascio kill. The Stars would get back into the set and would take the lead for good in the set, at 16-15, on a Banana Slugs' attack error. The Stars would gain their largest lead of the set at five, at 24-19, on a Banana Slugs' attack error. The Stars would go on to win the first set 25-20 and took a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, the Stars would run out to a fast start as they led 3-1. The Stars would gain their largest lead of the set at four on three occasions; the third occasion at 11-7 on a Zach Sinn kill. The Banana Slugs would chip away at the Stars' lead, eventually tying the set at 11-11 on a Jake Howard kill and would take the lead at 12-11 on a Lake Merchen kill. The Stars would take the lead at 14-13 on a service ace. The Slugs would tie the set at 20-20 on a Merchen kill. The Stars would take the lead for good at 21-20 on a Sinn kill. The Stars would win the second set 25-22 and expanded their match lead to 2-0.

In the third set, the two teams would trade points for the first six serves. The Stars would gain the lead at 4-3 on a Jeremy Royko kill. The Stars would expand their lead to two on two occasions; the second occasion at 6-4 on a Sinn kill. The Banana Slugs would get back into the match and would gain their largest lead of the set at one on three occasions; the third occasion at 10-9 on a Cascio kill. The Stars would gain the lead for good at 14-13 on a Luke Spicer kill. The Stars would gain their largest lead of the set at seven on two occasions; the second occasion was at 24-17 on a Spicer kill. The Stars would win the third set 25-19 and won the match 3-0.

For UC Santa Cruz, Merchen had a match high twelve kills and for Dominican, Royko also had a match high twelve kills. Evan Kittle had a match high thirty-six assists for UC Santa Cruz and Alex Coyne also had thirty-six for Dominican. Evan Kittle led the Banana Slugs with seven digs and Jeremy Royko had a match high ten digs for the Stars.

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .255 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .303 while Dominican had a .388 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first and second sets at .407. The Banana Slugs had five more errors (23-18) than did the Golden Flyers.

The Banana Slugs will have their next two games tomorrow as they will take on Mount St. Joseph University and Lakeland College. The matches will be a part of the Lakeland Triangular. The match against the Cougars will be at 10:30 am while the match against the Muskies will take place at 12:30 pm.
