SANTA CRUZ (2-13) – The Banana Slugs finished their two match homestand as they took on Santa Barbara City College at West Field House. The Banana Slugs broke their one match losing skid as they defeated the Vaqueros 3-1 in a closely contested match.
Both teams lost their last match. The Banana Slugs lost 3-1 to Hope International University on Thursday in Santa Cruz while the Vaqueros lost 3-0 to Orange Coast College in Santa Barbara last Saturday.
In the first set, the Banana Slugs had nearly double the kills the Vaqueros did as the Banana Slugs eased to victory. The Banana Slugs won the first set 25-20 and took a 1-0 lead in the match. The second set belonged to the Vaqueros as they forced the Banana Slugs into five errors in the set. The Vaqueros won the second set 25-13 and tied the match at 1-1. In the third set, the Banana Slugs' offense took over as they had six more kills (14-8) than did the Vaqueros in the frame. The Banana Slugs won the third set 25-20 and took a 2-1 lead in the match. The fourth set was the tightest of all four sets. The Banana Slugs and Vaqueros traded points throughout the set and it took extra serves for the victor to be determined. The Banana Slugs came away with a 26-24 fourth set win and won the match 3-1.
For UC Santa Cruz, Ryan McLaughlin had ten kills and for Santa Barbara City, Taylor McCluskey had a match high fourteen kills. Shad Harris had twenty five assists for UC Santa Cruz and Kyle Smiley had a match high twenty seven for Santa Barbara City. McLaughlin led the Banana Slugs with nine digs and Howard Gomes had a match high eleven digs for the Vaqueros.
For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .200 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .273 while Santa Barbara City had a .169 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .154. The Banana Slugs had ten more assists (44-34) than did the Vaqueros.
The Banana Slugs will go on the road for their next seven matches. The next match for the Banana Slugs will be Friday as they take on California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. The first serve is set for 6 pm.
