LEXINGTON, Ky. - UCSC sophomore Lake Merchen was selected Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week. On Senior Night, in their lone match of the week, Merchen helped the #6 ranked Slugs to a 4 set victory over Cal Lutheran smashing a team high 18 kills and a .389 hitting percentage. He also finished finished second on the team with 8 digs.
"Being selected for the Player of the Week is both a privilege as well as a surprise," said Merchen. "Everyone on the team has been focused and working hard in and out of the gym and it has really showed. We have been stepping up our game and really fighting hard to achieve our goal of getting into the NCAA Tournament."
"I'm very pleased that Lake is receiving the recognition he deserves for this selection," says Head Coach Paul Leon. "Not only is he a major contributing force on the court, but he is a natural leader both in the classroom and gymnasium. He's had a very strong showing this season and I am excited to see what the future hold for him."
The Slugs have reached the end of their regular season compiling a 19-7 record and ranked #6 in the nation. As an Independent, they now will wait for the NCAA Tournament Selection Show on April 11th.
"I think going into Monday with the selection show and looking ahead to the tournament we are prepared and ready to go," added Merchen. "I will be watching the selection show on the bus ride to class come Monday."
This is the eighth Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week honor for UC Santa Cruz, with the most recent from Jake Landel on February 24, 2015.
