ROCHESTER (2-3) – The Banana Slugs finished their thirteen day hiatus as they took on Medaille College in Rochester. The match against the Mavericks was their first of the Golden Flyer Invitational. The Banana Slugs' defense held the Mavericks to just over a .200 hitting percentage and won the match 3-0.
Both teams lost their last match. The Banana Slugs lost 3-2 to NCAA Division III #3 Stevens Institute of Technology on January 21st in Newark while the Mavericks lost 3-0 to Ramapo College on Saturday in Mahwah.
In the first set, the Mavericks would gain their largest lead of the set at one on two occasions; the first occasion at 3-2 on a Banana Slugs' attack error. The Banana Slugs would take the lead for good, at 11-10, on a Mavericks' service error. The Banana Slugs would take their largest lead of the set at eight, at set point, on a Raymond Cascio kill. The Banana Slugs won the first set 25-17 and took a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, the Banana Slugs would lead from the opening serve. The closest that the Mavericks would come would be to tie the set, at 7-7, on a Steven Ebert kill. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at six on five occasions; the fifth occasion at set point on a service ace. The Banana Slugs won the second set 25-19 and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, the Mavericks started the set with three consecutive points – two on kills by Calvin Crosby and one on a kill by Matt Buss. The Mavericks would gain their largest lead of the set at four on two occasions; the second occasion at 8-4 on a Sam Bloomberg kill. The Banana Slugs would then go on a 12-5 run, capped by a Mavericks' attack error, to take the lead for good at 16-13. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at nine, at match point, on a Ryan Manley kill. The Banana Slugs won the third set 25-16 and won the match 3-0.
For UC Santa Cruz, Lake Merchen had a match high fifteen kills and for Medaille, Crosby had thirteen kills. Ryan McLaughlin had twenty assists for UC Santa Cruz and Matt Dempsey had a match high twenty six for Medaille. Cameron Bardeau and Kyle Donohue led the Banana Slugs with six digs and Joe DiGesare had a match high ten digs for the Mavericks.
For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .313 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .455 while Medaille had a .207 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .304. The Banana Slugs had twelve fewer service errors (17-5) than did the Mavericks.
The Banana Slugs will now have their next match later this afternoon as they take on Elmira College. The first serve is set for 3 pm.
