Banana Slugs Fly Past Soaring Eagles

ROCHESTER (2-3) – The Banana Slugs played their second match of the day as they took on Elmira College. The Banana Slugs hit over .500 and had their second sweep of the day 3-0 over the Soaring Eagles.

In their last match, the Banana Slugs won 3-0 over Medaille College earlier today in Rochester while the Soaring Eagles lost 3-1 to NCAA Division III #2 SUNY New Paltz earlier today in Rochester.

In the first set, the two teams would trade points, and the lead, for the first ten serves of the set. The Banana Slugs would take the lead for good, at 6-5, on a Lake Merchen kill. The Banana Slugs would take a double digit lead, at 17-7, on a Merchen kill. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at fifteen on two occasions; the second occasion at set point on a Jake Howard kill. The Banana Slugs won the first set 25-10 and took a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, the Banana Slugs started the set on a 10-1 run capped by a Justin Fortner kill. The Banana Slugs would gain a double digit lead, at 13-3, on a Raymond Cascio kill. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at fifteen on two occasions; the second occasion at set point on a Howard kill. The Banana Slugs won the second set 25-10 and took a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, the two teams would trade points for the first six serves. The Banana Slugs would take the lead for good at 4-3 on a Cascio kill. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at ten, at match point, on a Shad Harris kill. The Banana Slugs won the third set 25-15 and won their second consecutive match 3-0.

For UC Santa Cruz, Merchen had a match high thirteen kills and for Elmira, Mark Kawecki had seven kills. Ryan McLaughlin had a match high thirty eight assists for UC Santa Cruz and Jeremy Best had twelve for Elmira. Merchen led the Banana Slugs with a match high eight digs and Ryan Branigan had three digs for the Soaring Eagles.

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .529 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .636 while Elmira had a .026 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the third set at .231. The Banana Slugs had twenty four more assists (42-18) than did the Soaring Eagles.

The Banana Slugs will have two matches tomorrow. Their first match will be at noon as they take on NCAA Division III #10 (t) Nazareth and their second match will be at 2 pm as they take on NCAA Division III #14 Rivier University. Both matches will be in Rochester as a part of the Golden Flyer Invitational.
